CONC Inherited property from John Reynolds in 1836 in Parke County, Indiana.
He signed a receipt for his share as an heir. He inherited a share of property of Alsey Reynolds in 1839 in Parke County, Indiana. He signed a receipt for his share of the estate. In family folklore it is said that he is 'of Dutch descent Revalations parentage'. Judy Hamner writes'in the Mercer Co. Library there are some files...there was a group of'low Dutch' who were trying to found a community in Kentucky in the earliest days...it looks like the Darlands came from Holland to New Amsterdam in the mid-1600's.' They were farming in Brooklyn. Later, some of the Dutch moved to Somerset County, New Jersey. A colony was formed at Conwego, PA (South of Gettysburg). It was this group who attempted to move to Kentucky. One small group of them was temporarily in Berwick, while the KY negotiations were under way. Another researcher, JoJo, Says "Info that I picked up at the library in Montgomery Co., KY....takes the Darland name back to the 1600's when they came from Holland and the name was spelled Dorlandt." May have lived in North Carolina for a time after they were married-JED notebook, pg 151. Appears in Tax List Mercer Co., KY-JED notebook, pg 157. Spouse: Rebecca Carter Reynolds, b. 4 May 1799, d. 1 June 1873

Father: William Reynolds
Mother: Alice_(Alcey)

Research: taken from letter written by Berniece Darland of Lancaster, California to Margaret Wedell of Shoreview, Minnesota in Summer of 1969. Letter was transcribed in July 1997 by Michael Wedell of Arden Hills, Minnesota and is in his possession.
NOTE: researcher (Judith H.) commented that the name given on her Mercer Co., marriage record is "Rebecca Carter", but there are no records of a marriage to a man named Carter. A researcher (JoJo) gives a date for the marriage as being 18 Dec, 1819, and names Rebecca as "Rebecca Reynolds Carter". Great aunt Lizzy Darland is the person who first established Rebecca's surname as being "Reynolds". Rebecca Reynolds Carter was born on 5 Apr 1800 in South Carolina. Great aunt Lizzy's record gives Rebecca's place of birth as North Carolina, the 1850 Census gives her birthplace as South Carolina. She resided in 1822 in Indiana. She resided in 1850 in Washington, Parke Co., IN. She resided in 1870 in Pleasant Grove, Mahaska Co., IA. Living with Rebecca and her second husband Charles Ruble was a boy named B.I. Darland, aged 11 years, who was born in Iowa. This may have been one of her grandchildren. She was reportedly of Scotch-Irish Descent. Family folklore claims she was the first white woman to settle West of the Wabash River (one record calls it the 'Little Wabash', which would be in a different state). She may have had 9 children by the time she was 40 years old. In the 1850 census it indicates that she could neither read nor write. At that time two of her sons and a grandson were all listed as attending school.
Source: Terri DaVar Howard, from LDS Ancestral files KV87J (Rebecca Reynolds Carter), (Rebecca Runnolds). " Although the LDS Ancestral files establishes that these are two seperate women, in this record they are being merged as one person. The similarities in names, birthdates, wedding dates, and other information appears to be sufficient evidence to show that we are not dealing with two women but rather one person."--T.R. DaVar Howard
