Fuels Management

Fire suppression over the last 100 years and the lack of active forest management has left the forests of the United States in an unhealthy state. Fuel accumulation in the form of excess downed-woody material, and overstocking of vegetation has led to an increase in catastrophic conflagrations.

The National Fire Plan and current forest practices have begun to improve the state of our forests by active fuels management. This is done by actively reducing fuels in our forest by mechanical work such as thinning and piling, mechanical removal, and prescribed fire.

We have been working to reduce fuels and improve forest health for the past 8 years. We have completed thousands of acres within the wildland urban interface, improving forest health, reducing fire danger, and protecting personal and private properties.

Contractor was able to work very effectively around refuge eagle restriction dates. Work was completed in a very timely manner. Contractor representative was available and responsive to minor adjustments in work specifications. Contractor representative went out of the way to inform COTR on daily progress and status. Safe work practices were noted, and no accidents were reported. Overall end product was excellent." United States Fish and Wildlife

"The crew from Eagle Pass showed up on the 2nd of October and within ten days had all 104 acres thinned, piled and covered. The work the crew accomplished in that time period was exceptional. The sawyers were extremely adept at running the chainsaws and I believe their skills enabled the project to be completed in such a timely fashion."
